What Makes a Good Middle School Ecosystem Activity?

The best middle school ecosystem activities give students evidence to analyze and a problem to solve. Mysteries, graphs, food webs, competition scenarios, and CER writing help students explain how populations and ecosystem interactions change.

It’s easy for an ecosystems lesson to turn into a lot of vocabulary: population, community, competition, food web, limiting factors, invasive species. Students may be able to define all of those words and still struggle when you ask, “Why did this population decrease?”

That’s why I like using ecosystem activities for middle school that give students something to figure out.

Instead of just identifying parts of an ecosystem, for example, students can look at evidence, notice patterns, make predictions, and explain what they think happened. Adding a graph, food web, mystery, or short scenario can change a basic ecosystem activity into one requiring deeper thinking without adding a lot of prep.

Make Science Review More Engaging Without Adding Prep Time

I’m a big fan of starting with a problem before teaching all the vocabulary.

Give students an ecosystem where something has changed. Maybe a population suddenly drops. Maybe plants begin disappearing. Maybe fish are dying in a pond.

Then give students evidence they can use to figure out what happened.

You might include:

  • a population graph
  • a food web
  • rainfall data
  • information about available resources
  • evidence of a new species
  • a change in the environment

Students now have a reason to look closely at the information instead of just reading it because you told them to.

This works especially well at the beginning of a unit because students don’t have to know everything yet. They can make an initial prediction and revise it as they learn more.

It also fits well with the MS-LS2 ecosystem expectations, which emphasize using evidence and data to explain ecosystem interactions and changes.

For example, first show them that the rabbit population decreased. Then reveal that the amount of grass also decreased. Later, give them rainfall data or information about another animal using the same food source.

You don’t have to give students every clue at once.

Ask students whether the new evidence changes their original idea.

That gets students used to doing something scientists actually do: changing an explanation when new evidence doesn’t fit.

You don’t need a full investigation every time you want students to explore ecosystem data. A small graph or table can make a great bellringer.

Students might answer:

  • What pattern do you notice?
  • What changed first?
  • What could have caused the change?
  • What additional information would help you decide?

For example, if grass cover decreases and the rabbit population drops soon afterward, students can start connecting resource availability with population size.

Students can now visualize what a limiting factor is and not just define it.

This type of data analysis also connects to MS-LS2-4, which asks students to use evidence to explain how ecosystem changes affect populations.

Middle school students don’t need complicated graphs to practice good reasoning. In fact, too much information can distract from the concept you actually want them to notice.

A simple graph with two population trends can lead to a lot of discussion if the question is good. I’d rather have students explain one clear pattern than rush through five confusing graphs.

Food webs are another place where it’s easy to stop at labeling. Students definitely need to recognize producers and consumers, but the more important question is, what happens when something changes?

Give students a food web, then make one change. You could:

  • decrease a producer population
  • remove a predator
  • introduce a new competitor
  • reduce a food source
  • change the amount of water available

Then ask students to predict what happens next.

If the hawk population decreases, for example, students might predict that rabbits increase. Then they can think about what an increase in rabbits could do to the grass population.

Now students can start seeing an ecosystem as a connected system instead of a diagram covered in arrows.

Competition can be surprisingly tricky for students. They often assume that two organisms are competing simply because they live in the same habitat.

Instead, students need to look for a shared limited resource. Short scenarios are great for this.

For example, two bird species eat the same type of insect. One usually feeds early in the morning, and the other feeds at dusk. Are they competing?

There isn’t much text to read, but students still have to think about the resource, when it is being used, and whether it is actually limited.

You can ask students to identify:

  • the organisms
  • the resource
  • whether the resource is limited
  • the evidence that supports their answer

These kinds of scenarios also work well as partner practice, task cards, or a quick check after teaching competition.

I like stations, but only when there’s a reason for students to move. Stations don’t automatically become more engaging just because students are standing up.

You’ll want to give each station a different type of ecosystem evidence. One station might have a population graph. Another might have a food web. Another could show a change in rainfall.

Other stations could focus on:

  • competition
  • invasive species
  • limiting resources
  • human impacts
  • ecosystem stability

Students can use one recording sheet as they rotate.

I also prefer stations that students can complete in any order. Middle school groups rarely move at exactly the same pace, and we want to avoid traffic jams.

At the end, ask students to choose one piece of evidence that changed or strengthened their thinking. That gives the station work a purpose.

Invasive species make a good ecosystem case because several concepts come together naturally.

Students can look at:

  • competition
  • resource availability
  • habitat changes
  • food webs
  • population changes

Kudzu is an easy example.

If kudzu grows over native plants and blocks sunlight, students can first think about what happens to those plants. Then they can work outward and consider the organisms that depend on those plants for food or habitat.

I like asking students to identify the first likely effect before they start predicting everything that could eventually happen. Otherwise, ecosystem questions can turn into a long chain of guesses.

Start with:

Which population would probably be affected first? What evidence supports your answer?

Then let students trace the effects from there.

CER works best when students have evidence to work with.

If students just finished a mystery, graph analysis, station activity, or invasive species investigation, they now have data to use in their response.

Then a prompt such as: How did the introduction of Species X affect the ecosystem? makes sense.

Students can:

  1. make a claim
  2. choose evidence from the investigation
  3. explain how that evidence supports the claim

One small thing that helps is asking students to star or highlight the strongest piece of evidence before they start writing. It forces them to decide what information actually matters. That’s often the hardest part of CER for middle school students.

These competition understanding checks can also help you see whether students can apply what they know instead of just recalling a definition.

Task cards can be so much more than a set of flashcards. They can be used as:

  • an elimination mystery
  • an evidence hunt
  • partner practice
  • a scavenger hunt
  • a station activity
  • a review challenge

For example, students might answer ecosystem questions to eliminate possible explanations for a population decline.

They’re still practicing content, but now every answer helps them accomplish something.

The NGSS middle school standards map is also useful when you’re looking at how ecosystem interactions fit into the larger middle school life science standards.

Ecosystem activities are much more meaningful when students move from simple evidence to more complex applications.

A sequence might look something like this:

Start with a mystery or phenomenon.

Let students make observations and initial predictions before they learn vocabulary terms.

Explore population data and resource availability.

Use graphs, tables, short scenarios, and bellringers.

Teach the ecosystem concepts students need.

This is where I’d introduce or review vocabulary such as population, community, biotic and abiotic factors, competition, food webs, limiting factors, energy flow, and matter cycling.

Give students a larger problem to solve.

Finish with evidence-based writing.

Students can use what they learned to explain an ecosystem change in a short CER.

The activities don’t have to get longer as you go. The thinking should just get more complex.

It depends on what you need students to practice.

You also don’t need a completely different ecosystem for every lesson.

Using the same pond, forest, grassland, or other ecosystem several times can actually help. Students spend less time figuring out the setting and more time thinking about the science.

Students definitely need to learn ecosystem vocabulary. But knowing that competition means “organisms trying to use the same limited resource” isn’t the end goal.

Students should eventually be able to look at a situation and explain:

  • what changed
  • which organisms were affected
  • what resource or interaction was involved
  • what evidence supports their explanation

You don’t need elaborate ecosystem scenarios to accomplish this. A good graph, a short scenario, a changed food web, or a simple mystery can give students plenty to think about.
